Director's Area

The responsibilities, duties and powers of directors are prescribed in the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, but the main role of the director is to ensure all players enjoy themselves and to restore equity when required. The club needs directors to ensure the smooth organisation of each bridge session.

In the Taupo Bridge Club, directors usually do the following:
  • Setup the tablets
  • Set up the electronic scoring programme at the start of the session
  • Choose the movement of players and boards, depending on the number of tables
  • Put out the correct set of pre-dealt boards
  • During the session, keep the room moving in a timely manner and deal with any infractions and irregularities that may arise
  • At the end of the session calculate the scores for the session, calculate the ladder when it is the end of a competition and XML the results to the web.
  • Update the members playing data for the cashless payments and process.
  • Send off scores to X-club and do the backup
  • Not to mention checking if the kitchen is ready, dealing with conflicting requests for heating/cooling/opening windows/closing windows....
Most of our directors do all this while trying to play too!

We are very grateful to the small number of our members who so generously give them time to direct at Taupo.

Can you help?

We do always need more directors, and we haven’t had any new directors for some time. Please consider giving it a go yourself. You don’t need to be a great bridge player, or to know the Laws off-by-heart. You just need a willingness to learn and contribute to the club in this way. Training is available, so please contact a committee member if you are interested.
