Why learn bridge?
Many games provide fun, but Bridge grips you. It exercises your mind. Your mind can rust, you know, but Bridge prevents the rust from forming.
– Omar Sharif
No matter where I go, I can always make new friends at the Bridge table.
– Martina Navratilova
Bridge is a fabulous game played throughout New Zealand and all over the world. Bridge is renowned for keeping the mind stimulated and as Omar Sharif says, prevents the rust from starting. Bridge is great for the memory, keeps wits sharpened and provides friendship. It is a game of skill, not a game for gamblers and will keep you hooked for life.
Bridge is played competitively by all age groups at clubs throughout New Zealand (all clubs welcome visitors when you are travelling around the country) as well as socially with a glass of wine to keep the mind rolling. Check out the Tournaments page on the NZBridge website and you will find several tournaments running every weekend somewhere.
Bridge is not something that can be taught in 5 minutes and does require a commitment to complete a good portion of the lessons to get the maximum benefit. Over the course of 12 weekly lessons, you will learn the basics of the game to allow you to have enough tools to get you started on your bridge journey.
A journey that, for many, lasts for life - yes, it is that addictive!

Supervised Play
2026 sessions start on Wednesday 4 March at 1.30pm.
Are you a novice or learner bridge player (but have done lessons)?
or
Are you coming back to bridge after a break away?
or
Have you been playing bridge for a while but would like to practise some of the basics of bridge?
Then come along to supervised play at the Taupo Bridge Club. We will play hands of bridge, often with hands set up to practice a particular strategy. But there is no scoring, so no winners or losers. Several more experienced players facilitate the sessions and are available to answer questions and help you during the play. The proposed programme for 2026 is here.
Every Wednesday 1.30 -3.30pm from 4 March to 11 November 2026. Note the change in time for 2026.
No need to book in, just arrive. You can come every week or from time to time. You don’t need a partner.
$5 per session (cash) for club members, $10 per session (cash) for non-club members.
Supervised play sessions are run by Joan and Prue.
