Teams Ladder Competition-with handicaps
Supported by LiquorLand Taupo
Something Different
Currently we only play a team competition twice a year. One competition on Monday nights and one on Wednesday nights. These seem to be enjoyed at the time.
Daytime competitions currently have no team event. We have also played a successful on line teams competition and this could help to offer club bridge in future lockdowns if needed.
When: The last Thursday of a month from March to November at 1.30, venue the club rooms.
Format: Each month we will play, two matches of 10 boards with a tea break between matches.
Cost: $6 ($2 to go towards a wine prize mentioned below). These will be cashless.
Teams: These can be formed without any restriction, provided a team does not have more than one Open Player. Each team must comprise of 4 players, appoint a Leader and give the team a Name. Substitutes will be allowed.
Ladder: Initially teams will be placed at random on the ladder.

In Practice
- Register your team to play each month. The Team Leader will get an email in the middle of the month asking whether the team is playing or not. Leaders will try to get subs in the first place.
- Setup on the day. With sufficient teams then a round robin type competition will be used for the draws. Matches maybe allocated from the top of the ladder down but adjusting so that a team does not play the same team as in the previous session. This is not the preferred choice.
- If the challenger wins then they are placed immediately above the beaten team on the ladder. .
- The results of both rounds are added and all teams are then ranked on this. The top placed team(s) win the wine on that day. Depending on the number of teams this could be one or two. Teams can only win this once during the round robin series. Teams will need to finish in the top half to qualify when teams above them have already won the wine.
- A team may ask to be removed from the ladder at any time.
- At the start of each match the weaker of the two teams will be given an adjustment based on the difference in the average handicap of each team, This will be in Imps. The methodology being used is from the English Bridge Union and is similar to what X clubs can use. I have written a report in Scorer to do this calculation for each team.
- An updated ladder will be in the playing room.
- Any member may be a leader and make up a team from Social players( non club members). As they will need to pay cash the leader will be responsible for this. Put the cash in an envelope and give to the organiser.
- To make this work we need at least 12 teams to initially register this year. Note when they play is up to the individual team. In any given month a minimum of 8 teams playing is required.
Some information on scoring ( only if you really want to!)
Suppose that on board 1 at table 1, one pair of team A who sat North/South at table 1 and bid and made 4♠ not vulnerable.
This gave them a score of +420.
At table 2 the other pair of the same team would sit East/West for this hand. The North/South of team B bid 3♠ with the same cards and made an over trick.
This gave East/West a score of –170.
This means the net score(gain) for team A is +420 – 170 = +250.
Of course the net score for team B is therefore –250.
The above is match point scoring (MP) that is usually used at the club or home.
In teams we convert net scores to International Match Points (IMPs) according to the an international scale.
For example, a net score of +250 is +6 IMPs whereas a net score of –250 is –6 IMPs on this international scale.
We repeat this for each board and add up the total IMPs.
Conversion to Victory Points.
If, for example, Team A have a total of 60 IMPS over all of the boards played, and their opponents have a total of 35 IMPs, then Team A win by a difference of 25 IMPs.
All matches will have this difference converted to Victory Points (VP)
This results all matches being scored out of 20.
If both teams get the same number of IMPS then the difference is zero and each team gets 10 VP each
A team that wins the match gets somewhere between 10+ and 20 VP
A team that losers gets somewhere between 0 and up to 10
A bit technical but you can check the conversion here https://www.ebu.co.uk/laws-and-ethics/vp-scales
