Maybe we need a defibrillator.

2/6/2016

Thanks to Frank Weeks for this Blog

These things happen.  The opposition opened with a 1S and as I had five hearts  and 15 points I called 2H.   With the opposition moving to 2S my partner called 3H. Assuming we had nine hearts between us and at least 24 points I called 4H but was horrified when my partner put his hand down and revealed he only had one point. Incredible to say, I made game.      A combination of being able to cross trump plus the opposition throwing a wrong card in the final plays I made the four.  Being the only players in the room to make the bid plus making it gave us a top board of course. Unfortunately the result board does not show the hands on the particular night so I was unable to record the card distribution for posterity.     However, the moral of the story is,  please do not raise a bid to the three level with one point in your hand.  Heart attacks are not encouraged.

Congratulations Frank on being the first to use our new blog. If others like this then please leave a comment

Excellent result Frank but - more seriously, the thought of a defibrillator for the Club has crossed my mind. Given our average age (about early 50's - and the dissolute lives many of us have led!) and the fact that we have such excitingand depressing moments in the course of game, such a life-saver coud be a good idea. Just one life saved would more than justify the cost. What about running our own "charity" tournament to raise the $4 k or so required? I would be willing to get behind it if the committee thought the idea had merit.
Cheers
Mike

I have forwarded this to the committee.

I have pressed "no" for the idea of getting a defibrillator for the club. I think that if someone has a cardiac arrest after seeing the cards in dummy CPR and dialing 111 would remain the best hope.
I am not familiar with the modern automative external defibrillator. With the ones I have seen used, in order for the heart to start after being shocked by a defibrillator the correct diagnosis has had to be made, and the paddles of the defibrillator places in the correct position on bare flesh within a minute or two of the arrest.
The person who has had experience of managing cardiac arrests at Taupo Hospital is Allen Zohrab, and i would suggest you ask him for his opinion

I can only add to this debate by saying that I would support the idea as long as we can be sure that enough members know exactly what to do in an emergency.

I have put this item on the agenda for our next committee meeting but I am in two minds about this. I was trained in using a defibrillator several years ago, but wouldn't have a clue how to use it now, and I must admit that the thought of having to use it, scared me somewhat. The training is important and I feel this is the part that might be an issue. Definitely worth debating though!

Traning should not be a problem. We could ask/pay a St John representative to give an instruction course to those that want to attend. This is what we did at the Golf Club two years ago. The modern machines are basically automatic that relay verbal instructiions when activated. If we could get say 20 -30 of our regular members to attend such a course then the odds woud be very good that at least one of them would be in attendance at any given bridge session.

In light of the information provided by Mike of what the golf club have done I think it would be a good idea.

My wife, who is the Chair for the local St John, reminded me that the St John in the Wairarapa put in 18 while she had the same role there.

She also told me that she believes the St John are the cheapest place to get them from, and theirs issues spoken instructions when they are put to use.

I attended the so called training session at the golf club but really have no confidence in using it and could perhaps be better employed administering the last rites should they be required!

I'm with Ralph on this. The training sessions have to be really hands on to be useful and then those trained have to be prepared to actually use the defibrillator if necessary. It might be months or years following training before being called to use it. I would hate to see someone die, but I would also hate to kill someone by using the equipment wrongly.

All comments read as if a trained person will be required at each Bridge session. The job of drawing a roster to cover all sessions covered a tough call, who will responsible if a trained operator cannot be found for a session? The big question is, how long has the Bridge Club been active in Taupo and How many Bridge Players have had heart attacks at the club?

May the first not be me.(joke) Call St Johns for me, I cannot quite cope with the ida of a fellow Bridge club Member ripping off my gear.

Also the Golf Club has paid staff on site either in the office or canteen at all times. The Bridge Club is managed by a committee of volunteers , will this add to the work load?
